BR03

A study of CCNU with and without benznidazole in the treatment of recurrent grades 3 and 4 astrocytomas

Can a drug called benznidazole help to treat people with a brain tumour?

What was this study about?

The BR03 trial aimed to test whether adding a drug called benznidazole to the chemotherapy drug CCNU could help to treat people with a type of brain cancer called astrocytoma that had started to re-grow after treatment with radiotherapy.

What difference did this study make?

The results of this trial suggested that adding benznidazole to the existing chemotherapy did not help this group of patients to live longer.

Having shown that benznidazole was not helpful in this group of patients it was not used further for patients with this type of brain tumour.
