MRCCTU Podcast – Patrick Royston Receives the Stata Journal Editors’ Prize 2016

07 Sep 2017

Back in January 2017, Professor Patrick Royston was awarded the Stata Journal Editors' Prize 2016, for his significant contributions to Stata and the Stata community over the last 25 years, and for three papers he published in the Stata Journal during the previous two years. Today, Patrick will officially receive his award at 2017 London Stata Users Group meeting in London.

Patrick's research has focused upon many areas; from the medical application of statistical modelling, to clinical trial design methodology, he has produced a wide range of research that is used on a daily basis by many people, including at MRC Clinical Trials Unit.
The specific articles for which the prize was awarded are:

  • P Royston. Tools for checking calibration of a Cox model in external validation: Approach based on individual event probabilities. Stata Journal 2014; 14: 738-755
  • P Royston. Tools for checking calibration of a Cox model in external validation: Prediction of population-averaged survival curves based on risk groups. Stata Journal 2015; 15: 275-291
  • P Royston. Estimating the treatment effect in a clinical trial using difference in restricted mean survival time. Stata Journal 2015; 15: 1098-1117

To commemorate this occasion, we have interviewed Patrick for the first podcast in our new series 'MRCCTU: The Ideas Behind the Trials'. The interview explores Patrick's career in more depth, and provides an insight into his work with Stata, including fractional polynomials, and survival analysis "beyond the Cox model".  There is also some excellent advice for younger statisticians just starting out in the field.
